About TSX

Overview

This page tracks TSX and TSX Venture market updates for the resource companies that call Toronto home, or use it as a launchpad into global capital.

No other exchange on earth lists more mining companies than the TSX and TSX Venture combined. Toronto did not stumble into this. It built the plumbing, the analysts, the specialist funds, and the listing rules around resources decades ago, and miners never really left.

Why miners choose a TSX listing

Toronto speaks mining fluently, and that matters more than people outside the industry realise.

Analysts here know the difference between a resource and a reserve without being told twice. Investors understand exploration risk instead of running from it. That kind of specialist audience is worth more to a junior explorer than a slightly bigger index sitting somewhere else.

Gold and base metals anchor the TSX story

The consensus around Canadian gold has traditionally clung to Barrick Mining (TSX: ABX) and Agnico Eagle Mines (TSX: AEM). Teck Resources (TSX: TECK. B) does a fair whack of the base metals dressing, copper and zinc mostly, and First Quantum Minerals (TSX: FM) has a wider net cast across the Americas doing essentially the same thing.

Then you've got the Venture exchange sitting underneath all of it, which is really where the TSX earns its reputation. Thousands of small explorers list there, most drilling holes that go nowhere, a handful drilling the hole that changes everything. Nobody knows which is which until the assays come back.

What TSX market news moves these stocks

Drill results, feasibility studies, permitting decisions and commodity prices do most of the heavy lifting.

Junior explorers can double or halve on a single assay result. Producers move more on copper, gold and zinc prices than on anything company-specific. Political risk matters too, since a lot of TSX-listed miners operate assets in Africa, South America and other jurisdictions where a change in government can rewrite a project's economics overnight.
