About BHP
BHP Group Limited (LSE: BHP) is one of the largest prime diversified resources houses in the world. Global commodity output from its assets include iron ore, copper, metallurgical coal, nickel and potash. This BHP Share Price (LSE: BHP) & Mining Profile gives a closer look at where that output actually comes from.
The Company operates in over 90 sites worldwide, operating Australia and also Chile, with subsidiaries in United States, Canada, Brazil and Peru. That spread means BHP is not betting on one mine or one region. Its fortunes rise and fall across several commodities and continents at once.
Western Australia Iron Ore
This is BHP's biggest operating division by far. Four processing hubs and five mines sit across the Pilbara, all part of the same sprawling network.
These mines are connected to the port at Port Hedland by more than 1,000 kilometres of rail. The operation is anchored by Newman, Jimblebar and the South Flank, while the Company continues to invest in rail and port capacity for ongoing ore movement.
Queensland Coal
BHP operates here through the BHP Mitsubishi Alliance, mining metallurgical coal out of the Bowen Basin. This is what steelmakers across the globe rely on to come out of this earth.
Mines in this portfolio are Broadmeadow, Caval Ridge, Goonyella Riverside, Peak Downs and Saraji. All of this is channeled through the Hay Point Coal Terminal for export.
Minerals Americas
Chile is where BHP's copper story really lives. Escondida, the largest copper mine on Earth, sits at the centre of it.
Pampa Norte chips in more copper through its Spence and Cerro Colorado operations further north. Zinc concentrate and thermal coal also come out of this division, though copper remains the headline act.
Olympic Dam
Down in South Australia, Olympic Dam does something unusual: copper, gold, silver and uranium all come from the same orebody.
That gives BHP a foothold well outside its usual iron ore and coal territory. It is a long-life asset, and one the Company is not likely to walk away from anytime soon.
Nickel West
Nickel West is based around Kalgoorlie in Western Australia and takes in the entire chain with mines, concentrators, a smelter and a refinery all under one banner.
Mount Keith does much of the heavy lifting here. This division ties BHP directly to two growth stories at once: stainless steel and lithium-ion batteries.
Jansen Potash Project
Out in Saskatchewan, Canada, BHP is chasing something big: what could turn out to be one of the world's largest potash mines.
The plan has production starting in 2027 or thereabouts, kicking off at roughly 8.5 million tonnes a year. Push through to later phases, and that number could climb toward 16 to 17 million tonnes annually.
Portfolio Focus
BHP has deliberately narrowed its focus to iron ore, higher-grade metallurgical coal, copper, nickel and potash. Copper ties the Company to the global push toward electrification.
Jansen, meanwhile, points toward something different: potash built to support more sustainable food production and land use down the track. Between the two, BHP has a foot in both old-world steelmaking and where the world seems to be heading next.
