Nutrien is the world's largest fertilizer producer by capacity, and it reaches farmers in a way few rivals can.

Nutrien Ltd. Company profile

The company formed in 2018 when PotashCorp merged with Agrium. It makes all three major crop nutrients: potash, nitrogen and phosphate.

Nutrien holds about a 20% share of global potash capacity, the largest of any producer, and runs the biggest agricultural retail network in North America and Australia. It sells seed, crop protection and agronomy services alongside fertilizer.

That retail arm smooths earnings when fertilizer prices swing, giving Nutrien a steadier profile than a pure miner.

Nutrien potash and fertilizer stock news

Nutrien reported first quarter 2026 results on 6 May 2026, with net earnings of US$139 million and adjusted EBITDA of US$1.11 billion.

Potash carried the quarter. Record sales lifted the segment's earnings to US$578 million, with controllable cash costs held below US$60 per tonne, while nitrogen earnings rose to US$482 million.

Chief executive Ken Seitz flagged tight global supply. Nutrien guides potash sales of 14.1 to 14.8 million tonnes for 2026. The company is reviewing options for its phosphate business, its Trinidad nitrogen plant and its Brazilian retail arm, and returned US$409 million to shareholders in the quarter.

Commodity performance

Nutrien's earnings track the price of potash and nitrogen, which move with global crop prices and planted acreage. Tight supply has supported benchmarks into 2026.

Natural gas is the other factor, since gas is the main feedstock for nitrogen. Cheap North American gas is a structural edge for its plants. The live commodity performance section on this page shows current fertilizer trends.
