Iron ore still generates most of the cash. The growth story, though, has moved toward the metals that feed electrification.
Four businesses under one roof
Rio runs iron ore, copper, aluminium and lithium. Its iron ore heartland is the Pilbara in Western Australia, backed by the Iron Ore Company of Canada.
The giant Simandou project in Guinea began operations in 2025, adding a new source of high-grade ore aimed at lower-carbon steelmaking.
A new chief with a simpler plan
Simon Trott became chief executive on 25 August 2025, succeeding Jakob Stausholm. The Australian ran Rio's iron ore division, its most profitable business, before taking the top job.
His strategy, branded "Stronger, Sharper, Simpler," focuses on cutting costs, tightening the portfolio and lifting productivity.
The lithium bet
Rio spent about US$6.7 billion acquiring Arcadium Lithium, folding the business into its expanded aluminium and lithium group.
That deal, alongside heavy Simandou spending, pushed net debt to US$14.4 billion in early 2026, up from US$5.5 billion a year earlier. Copper growth leans on the Oyu Tolgoi mine in Mongolia.
What investors watch
Iron ore prices remain the single biggest driver of Rio's earnings, tied closely to Chinese steel demand.
Beyond that, the market is watching how quickly Simandou ramps up and whether the lithium and copper businesses deliver the growth Trott has promised. A mooted merger with Glencore was explored in 2024 but collapsed over valuation.
